Festivals and Events: 58th Annual Miramichi Folksong Festival

Another festival on the river has come to a close with the 58th Annual Miramichi Folksong Festival. Canada's longest running folksong festival lives on the Miramichi with this festival, run by Susan Butler.

Susan Butler is the third and current director of the festival and takes pride in putting it on every year for the people of Miramichi and those who come from far and wide to enjoy folk songs.

The founder of the festival, Dr. Louis Manny, started it at the request of Lord Beaverbrook, who asked her to collect folk songs on the Miramichi, and the rest is history. In honour of Lord Beaverbrook, the festival takes place at the Beaverbrook Kin Centre every year.

This year was packed with entertainment for everyone, The festival start on Sunday, Aug. 2 with a free gospel concert and each day continued with luncheons, suppers and great musical entertainment from local artists and artists that come from away every year to take part in the festival.

The final evening there was supper and the entertainment was an entire night of tributes to past great folk song artists: Rita MacNeil, Stan Rogers, Stompin' Tom Connor and The Rankins.

For anyone looking to come to the Miramichi area, here are a few things that can I help you plan your trip.

First things first, there are two main websites that you can check out to learn about all the things to see, places to stay and where to go. These are www.miramichi.org and www.discovermiramichi.com.

Both of these websites will help people figure out what they want to do before they come to the city and definitely worth checking out if you like to plan your vacation.

For people who like to just go with the flow, there is an information center within the city limits to help people find what they are looking for.

The information center has people on hand to answer any questions people might have. They also have a bit of history about Miramichi, background on some of the things that can be seen here and also an entire rack of pamphlets for the avid adventurer.
